Police investigate spate of burglaries

Urge residents to be vigilant, report suspicious activity

BRATTLEBORO — The Brattleboro Police Department is reporting progress in an ongoing investigation into a string of burglaries and expects to make arrests soon.

According to Brattleboro Police Capt. Mark Mark Carignan, patrol officers continue to take reports and conduct initial investigations into burglaries, and detectives are conducting investigations.

Some of these cases involve cooperation with New Hampshire law enforcement agencies and Vermont State Police, he said.

Carignan said in a news release last week that several suspects have been identified, but names are not being released at this time because releasing them prematurely would limit investigations.

Stolen property has been recovered during the course of these investigations, including money, prescription medications, and firearms.

“As the investigations continue and conclude, arrests are expected,” Carignan said.

Police remind residents that they should take steps to prevent burglaries and to report anything that looks suspicious.

“We are out in the community a lot, but people know their own neighborhoods better than we ever could because they live there every day. If you see something out of place, call the police,” Carignan said. “We would much rather respond and find out the situation was not a problem than not get a call and miss a burglary.”

Residents can take additional steps to prevent burglaries by locking doors and windows in their homes and vehicles.

Carignan pointed out that garages, back doors, and basement bulkheads are often overlooked by homeowners, but are common burglary access points. If you leave town, make arrangements to have your mail stopped and your newspapers picked up.

And, if there's a storm while you are gone, make sure someone shovels your snow. A house that appears unoccupied is an attractive target for a burglar, Carignan said.
