BRATTLEBORO — I thank the many people in the area who have traveled with me through the Brattleboro Senior Center program.
Almost 15 years ago, former Activities Director Irene Alexa asked me to lead a small group of Brattleboro senior travelers to a St. Patrick's Day Celebration just for the day.
From local day trips, to longer journeys (Nova Scotia; Prince Edward Island; Montreal; Nashville, Tenn.; Cape Cod; Ogunquit, Maine; New Orleans; and Savannah, Ga.), to one of our most memorable adventures to Ireland, we've enjoyed our adventures in travel over the years, and I became good friends with many of you.
Now, all these years later, I have made the difficult decision to turn the reins over to someone else, and I submitted my resignation to Assistant Director Jessy Cudworth in January.
I hope to continue traveling with you when I can, just not as your leader. I suggested a couple of names to Jessy of candidates to run the travel program and perhaps make some necessary changes to make the trips work for some of the younger people of the area.
It has been very difficult to make the program work effectively when I spend time traveling back and forth to our place in Maine. There, I volunteer for a couple of area venues, including the Ogunquit Playhouse, which has become a great joy in my life.
I was able to keep in touch with the center, Jessy, and many of you travelers by cell phone when I was in Maine; however, the numerous trips back and forth proved to be very costly and tiring.
I appreciate the assistance from the dedicated ladies who volunteer their time at the center answering the telephone, taking messages, and accepting payments for the trips, along with Jessy and Jane Moore, who helped wherever needed.
Hopefully, someone will be willing to coordinate future trips to keep our area seniors traveling at affordable prices.
Thanks again for your many years of support.
