Dummerston author creates pocket-size edition of her tracking book

BRATTLEBORO — Vermont forester, educator, and author Lynn Levine has just written a book for anyone interested in learning about nature.

“Mammal Tracks and Scat: Life-Size Pocket Guide” ($14.95, Heartwood Press) is a year-round, waterproof guide with life-sized illustrations of both tracks and scat - yes, even the bear - that will fit in your pocket.

Both track and scat sections are organized with original keys to help you determine the species of animal and gather evidence to discover the “story” at the scene of a mystery.

Levine, a consulting forester and environmental educator for 36 years, also is co-author of “Working with Your Woodland” and “Mammal Tracks and Scat: Life-Size Tracking Guide,” and is author of “Snow Secrets,” a nature detective book for ages 8-12.

Co-author Martha Mitchell, illustrator of “Mammal Tracks and Scat: Life-Size Tracking Guide,” is a naturalist who integrates science with art.

Levine says she begain tracking in 1988 with the help of a trapper/logger who helped her look down instead of just up at the trees.

She says her tracking guide sold more than 12,500 copies and that this new, expanded pocket-size edition will make it easier for owners to put it to work in the field.
