West Brattleboro Association offers free movie night
WEST BRATTLEBORO - The West Brattleboro Association presents “The Triplets of Belleville” (2003; animated; kid friendly) as the main feature of its first free movie night, Thursday, Aug. 28.
The film, which got rained out last week, will be screened outdoors at dusk next to the West Brattleboro Fire Station. Shorts begin at 7:30 p.m. The main feature starts at 8.
Arrive early for bike-powered smoothies from the Bellows Falls Community Bike Project, on sale at 7, and music, circus toys, ice cream donated by Chelsea Royal Diner, and free popcorn.
Park in the school lot next to the fire station. Bring chairs. Seating is on the gravel lot to the left of the station.
Book, bake sales benefit Grafton library, historical society
GRAFTON - Nearly new and gently used books will be on sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the library green in historic Grafton on Saturday, Aug. 30. Find great deals newer books and older gems. Videotapes, DVDs, and CDs are for sale as well.
Bags and boxes will be available for carrying home finds. With few exceptions, prices are $2 for hardbacks, $1 for paperbacks, and $1 for audio-visual materials.
The sale, extremely important for the finances of the Grafton Public Library, also is a great opportunity for friends and visitors to stroll around the village and buy exquisite baked goods from the Grafton Historical Society's annual bake sale, which also is being held that day.
The Historical Society joins the library in ushering in the fall season with its annual sale of mums, collectibles, silent auction items, old cookbooks, and bakery goods from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Main Street in front of its museum.
A silent auction presents for bid Red Sox tickets, an original watercolor of the Grafton Meeting House, Metropolitan Opera tickets, a pizza dinner for six, a hand-made red, wooden wagon, a cord of wood and, of course, cheese, maple syrup, and jams.
Proceeds from this annual sale benefit the museum and support the restoration of the town's historic Brick Meeting House.
Vernon Historians host mum sale
VERNON - The Vernon Historians annual Mum Sale is Sunday, Aug. 31, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Vernon Historical Museum.
For sale: a variety of mums, coneflowers, late summer/early autumn grasses, and Russian sage, all great perennials for your home garden. A “garden in a pot” will also be raffled off at this event. Tickets are $1 each, $5 for six.
Along with the plants, a selection of hand-painted ornaments by Barbara Moseley are for sale. For more information, call Carol Hammond at 802-257-0207. The museum is open freely for visitors to browse the collections and gift shop.
Co-editors to lead a 'moment for peace'
BRATTLEBORO - The clear and elegant book “Questions for the Dalai Lama: Answers on Love, Success, Happiness, and the Meaning of Life” poses universal questions, giving answers from the Dalai Lama himself. Master gardeners present hypertufa workshop
NEWFANE - Hypertufa is a material used for plant containers that substitutes for limestone. Join the Windham County UVM Extension master gardeners for their third annual hands-on workshop and take a container home with you.
Meet on Saturday, Sept. 6, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Newfane Greenhouse, 391 Route 30. Fee is $20 for EMG members, $25 for everyone else. No special skills are needed. The workshop is open to all. Space is limited.

Spinning workshop offered at Brooks Library
BRATTLEBORO - Richard Muto and David Lima present a workshop on rolag/English long draw spinning on Saturday, Sept. 6, from 10 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. at Brooks Memorial Library's Meeting Room, 224 Main St.
Learn to card the perfect rolag using hand cards. Learn the 24 count of carding/charging the cards, transferring wool, and rolling under the hand card. Perfect rolags, like wisps of smoke, are perfect for the English long draw technique of spinning yarn.
The workshop is open to spinners 12 and up. It's free to members of the River Spinners; all others pay $30. Spinners should plan to bring a spinning wheel with Scotch tension, hand cards (broken in if possible), and a brown-bag lunch.

BMH Spinal Health Level 1 class begins Sept. 8
BRATTLEBORO - Brattleboro Memorial Hospital Rehabilitation Services offers its seven-week course, “Standing Tall Spine Health: Level 1,” starting on Monday, Sept. 8 in the BMH Exercise Room.
Classes run from 4 to 5 p.m. on Mondays through Oct. 20. Advance registration is required, and the fee is $60. For more information and to register, contact the BMH Rehabilitation Services department at 802-257-8255.
Each class consists of a brief educational session followed by guided exercise. Education topics include instruction in safe movement for fracture prevention, strength and flexibility exercises, balance and fall prevention, and nutrition for bone health.
River Gallery School lands challenge grant
BRATTLEBORO - The River Gallery School of Art has a scholarship campaign running through August with a special opportunity to keep art-making possible for everyone in the tri-state area.
RGS recently received a generous challenge grant from the Doune Trust Fund: the Doune Trust will match donors dollar for dollar up to a total $15,000. Through donations from parents, students and friends, RGS has received more than $10,000 and is two-thirds of the way to the challenge goal of $15,000.
