SAXTONS RIVER — The Food Security Collaborative is pleased to announce its Canning Workshop to be held on Sunday, Sept. 7, at 1 p.m., at Christ's Church on Main Street.
This hands-on workshop will cover canning basics. The focus will be on water bath canning, but the differences between canning methods and reasons for using different methods for different foods will be covered. Types of containers to use and best storage conditions will also be covered as well as basic economics of canning your garden harvest for use in the winter months.
Workshop participants will have the opportunity to practice the steps in the canning process and will leave with the skills necessary to safely can at home. Workshop participants will go home with a pint of canned tomatoes prepared during the workshop.
Workshop presenter Sandy Stevens has had a large home garden for many years. As a child, her parents had a large garden and she grew up helping her mom can food for the family. Some of her canning knowledge was learned from assisting her mom in the process, but the remainder has been self-taught.
For many years, Stevens has being canning extra veggies from her own garden to provide her family with food during the winter months. She looks forward to sharing her knowledge of canning with the community.
Space is limited in this free workshop. Pre-registration is required. To register, contact Kari Gypson at 802-282-8669 or [email protected].
