BRATTLEBORO — Green Up Day has been an annual tradition in Vermont since 1970, and local Green Up committee volunteers are busy pulling together the details of meeting sites, making sure there are refreshments for volunteers, putting up reminder posters, and many other tasks.
One of these tasks is finding the funds to underwrite the costs. Doing its part, burton Car Wash and Detailing is holding its ninth annual Green Up benefit on Friday, April 18, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. At Burton Touch Free Car Wash, 873 Putney Rd.
All proceeds from the three car wash bays and the detail shop will be donated to the local Green Up organization.
WTSA will broadcast live from the car wash for these two hours, and Integrated Solar will co-sponsor the broadcast.
One tangible result of past burton Car Wash fundraisers is the Green Up Day banner now hanging on the car wash building - and soon to hang across Main Street the week prior to Green Up Saturday.
Organizers say everyone's participation is greatly appreciated, not only at the fundraiser but also at Green Up Day activities on Saturday, May 3, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at sites all over Brattleboro and Windham County.
Volunteers in Brattleboro can meet Saturday morning at any one of three meeting stations - Brattleboro Subaru on Putney Road, Elliot Street Café on Elliot Street, and the West Brattleboro Green near the firehouse - to pick up green trash bags and, if desired, to receive direction as to areas that need cleaning up.
In a wire service report earlier this year, Green Up Vermont President Melinda Vieux told Vermont Public Radio that after 2015 they “face planning an orderly shutdown” unless a $120,000 hole in their budget caused by declining corporate sponsorships can be patched.
