Pet vaccination clinic offered in Wardsboro

WARDSBORO - The Wardsboro Town Office will sponsor a pet vaccination clinic at the office of the Town Clerk on Saturday, March 22, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Dr. Miles A. Powers of East Dover will be vaccinating both dogs and cats. This clinic is open to anyone. For the convenience of Wardsboro residents, the Town Clerk will be present to issue licenses.

Fees will be $10 for rabies and $15 for a distemper-complex vaccine for either a dog or cat, or $20 for both vaccinations. Dogs should be on a leash and cats in a carrier. For further information, call 802-348-7918.

Hospice, BMH present forum on Act 39 and end-of-life issues

BRATTLEBORO - Brattleboro Area Hospice and Brattleboro Memorial Hospital Ethics Committee invite the public to a free presentation, “Act 39: Patient Choice and Control at the End of Life,” on Monday, March 24, from 6 to 8 p.m., at BMH's Brew Berry Conference Room.

Vermont's law pertaining to Patient Choice at the End of Life took effect on May 20, 2013 and legalizes physician-aid in dying for eligible adults living with a terminal illness.

Featuring Cindy Bruzzese, the Executive Director of the Vermont Ethics Network, this forum is not a debate for or against Act 39; it is a public informational presentation only and allows time for questions and answers.

'Community Sharing' is theme of Transition Dummerston potluck

DUMMERSTON - Transition Dummerston will hold its monthly potluck and program on Friday, March 28, from 6 to 9 p.m., at the Dummerston Congregational Church. This month's program will focus on “Community Sharing: Building a System for Community Exchange of Services, Tools, Rides, Time, Work, and much more.”

Participants will share information about existing Exchange programs such as Brattleboro TimeShare, and explore questions such as “What needs do you have?” and “What can you offer in exchange?"

The usual potluck supper will begin at 6 p.m. (local food encouraged!) followed by the program at 7 p.m. The Congregational Church is located in Dummerston Center at the intersection of Middle and East-West Roads.

Rec. Dept. hosts youth chess tournament

BRATTLEBORO - The Brattleboro Recreation & Parks Department will host a youth chess tournament at the Gibson-Aiken Center Senior Center on Saturday, March 29, from 1 to 4 p.m.

This program is for participants from Kindergarten to Grade 8. The cost of this program is $3 for participants that pre-register or $5 at the door. Eric Strickland will be running the tournament. Depending on the number of entrants, contestants will be divided into appropriate groups. Swiss System, no players are ever eliminated. Game boards will be provided.

'Letting Go of Stress' class presented at BMH

BRATTLEBORO - Starting Wednesday, April 2, from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m., the six-session “Letting Go of Stress” class will be presented at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital. The class is taught by Marc Cohen, M.A., LCMHC.

The class is designed to be a supportive and very practical training program in stress reduction modeled after Jon Kabat-Zinn's pioneering work at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center's Stress Clinic. The class will provide participants with the theory, practice, and motivation needed to establish and maintain an effective lifelong stress reduction program.

Participants will learn and practice the fundamentals of mindfulness meditation, deep mind/body relaxation, and quick and easy to practice techniques for reducing the stress and anxiety of daily living . Written materials and a CD for home practice will be provided. There is a $150 fee for the six session class, with group and couples discounts and partial scholarships available. SEVCA announces free financial fitness classes

BRATTLEBORO - Southeastern Vermont Community Action (SEVCA) will offer a financial fitness workshop this spring. This eight-part workshop series will help participants discover how to use the money they have and take steps towards prosperity.

Participants will learn to improve their relationship with money, increase cash flow, and experience financial security. Other topics covered include saving, spending, credit, paying for college, purchasing a home, purchasing a car, insurance and retirement. One's credit report can be reviewed and recommendations provided to take steps to build healthy credit or resolve credit issues.

The workshops are free and open to the public. They will begin on Wednesday, April 9, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m, and continue each Wednesday night thru June 4 at Marlboro College Graduate School, 28 Vernon St. Pre-registration is required. Call 802-722-4575, ext. 151, or email [email protected].

Spring hospice volunteer training at Grace Cottage Hospital

TOWNSHEND - Applications for Brattleboro Area Hospice's Spring training are due Monday, April 7. The Volunteer Training begins May 3 through June 28, with two half-day Saturdays, and Thursdays, 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. The first 10 spaces in the training will be held for West River Valley residents who wish to volunteer.

Hospice Volunteers help and support neighbors and their families who are living with life-threatening illnesses throughout Windham County. Help may range from errands and gardening to emotional and physical support. Volunteers report the work is challenging and very rewarding.

Training topics include Hospice philosophy, nuts and bolts of volunteering, ethical issues, personal attitudes toward death and dying, and grief issues among others. Presenters include professionals from the community as well as Hospice staff and volunteers.

Call the Hospice office for an application at 802-257-0775. There is a $40 contribution requested to cover the cost of training materials.
