GUILFORD — Members of the Brattleboro Interfaith Junior Youth Group are traveling to Glen Rose, Texas, from March 20 to 25 to volunteer at the Fossil Rim Wildlife Sanctuary, a reserve for endangered animal species.
Pastor Lise Sparrow of Guilford Community Church said that this group of middle schoolers, who meet monthly for community service and fun, came up with the idea of combining a service trip with their interest in - and love of - animals.
The trip, part of Mission 4-1 Earth, is intended to create a deeper appreciation and responsibility for the Earth and its species, Sparrow said.
The group of 13 will spend five days at Fossil Rim engaged in a variety of activities: a bird walk, fossil hike, trail work, an ecology night hike, a frog call census, and an overnight desert campout.
The youths will be chaperoned on the trip by Sparrow and three other adults.
To help pay for the trip, the youths held a Texas-style chicken barbecue at Guilford Community Church on Feb. 21. Sparrow said the event was a success, with about 130 meals served, including to-go orders.
