BRATTLEBORO — Vermont Theatre Company announces auditions for its spring production of Woody Allen's Cold War-era comedy “Don't Drink the Water,” the wacky story of a dysfunctional American family trapped behind the Iron Curtain.
A 1969 comedy film, starring Jackie Gleason and directed by Howard Morris, was based upon Allen's 1966 play of the same name.
Performances are May 2-4 and 8-11, 2014, at the Evening Star Grange in Dummerston Center. Marilyn Tullgren directs; Nancy Groff and Randy Bright produce.
The production offers roles for 16 people ranging in age from early 20s to 50s, or perhaps early 60s.
Needed are Father Drobney, an eccentric priest; Ambassador Magee, a hard-nosed, dignified, mid-50s; Kilroy, the ambassador's assistant and a punctilious rat; Axel Magee, the ambassador's pleasant, well-meaning son, 28; Walter and Marion Hollander, mid-50s; their beautiful daughter, Susan, 21; Krojak, head of the secret police; Burns, U.S. embassy employee; Chef, flamboyant, flustered; Sultan of Bahir, a desert chieftain; the Sultan's first wife; and Countess Bordoni.
Auditions are Sunday, Dec. 8, at 2 p.m., and Monday, Dec. 9, at 7 p.m. in the Brattleboro Union High School auditorium.
Those auditioning will be asked to read selected scenes from scripts provided by the director. Copies of the script will be available for perusal at Brooks Memorial Library.
