I-91 bridge work set to disrupt traffic patterns

BRATTLEBORO — Single-lane closure of the passing lane on the northbound and southbound spans of the West River Bridges on Interstate 91 is scheduled to begin Sept. 26.

The lane closures will remain in effect during the construction of the temporary crossovers, and will be removed over the weekend when no workers are present.

Look for slowing to 40 mph through the work zone on Route 30, and plan on leaving a little more time to travel through there until August 2016.

Truck activity at Route 30 will increase this week. Expect shoulder closures beginning Sept. 26. Flaggers may have to halt traffic every so often to allow trucks to enter and exit the work zone safely.

Truck activity on the West River Trail may begin to increase as well. Look for closures of the trail starting Sept. 26 to allow trail modifications necessary for construction. Crews say the trail should be open for the weekend of Sept. 28-29.

After Sept. 30, workers may need to regulate traffic flow on Route 30 every so often to allow truck and equipment access to the work zone. These operations will be controlled by flaggers and will last for at most 10 minutes at a stretch.

During the week of Oct. 7, one lane of Route 30 will be closed for approximately two days straight. Flaggers will regulate vehicle movement through the work zone.

Contractors warn to expect brief closures of Route 30 in late November or early December due to overhead demolition activities. Contractors say they will announce the dates and duration of these closures as they become available.

From Nov. 1-30, workers will remove the northbound I-91 bridge spans over the West River and install navigation buoy devices for recreation traffic on the West River, directing them under spans not facing operations.

Crews say they don't anticipate the need to close the West River to recreational users for this work.
