Windham County Career Expo brings employers, job seekers together
BRATTLEBORO - Top employers are coming together to promote careers in southeast Vermont.
On Thursday, Sept. 26, from 2 to 6 p.m., at the Quality Inn on Putney Road, 25 employers, along with several colleges, technical schools, and employment services agencies, will be staffing informational tables as part of Windham County's first-ever Career Expo.
The Expo will showcase several of the county's largest employers in health care, hospitality, manufacturing, wholesale trade, food production, and energy, among other industry sectors. A complete list of exhibitors is available at www.vermontcareerexpo.com/exhibitors.

Transition Dummerston to hold 'Share Our Harvest' community potluck dinner
DUMMERSTON - Transition Dummerston will hold its monthly potluck dinner on Friday, Sept.27, from 6 to 8:30 p.m., at the Dummerston Community Center.
This month's gathering, “Share Our Harvest: Community Potluck Dinner,” will be an opportunity to share and celebrate the riches of this harvest season, with the emphasis on fellowship and conversation.
After dinner, there will be an opportunity to hear about the summer's projects, including Inner Transition, the “Share Our Surplus” garden surplus exchange, the Garden Tour, the Dutton Pines State Park project, and the Home Energy Challenge. There will also be time for discussing possible future projects, including neighborhood pot-lucks, fall workshops for putting up food, and other ideas people are interested in.
The potluck supper will begin at 6 p.m., with people encouraged to include local food in their dishes. Conversations will begin at 7:30 p.m.. The Community Center is located at 150 West St. in West Dummerston. Transition Dummerston is part of the international Transition Town movement building local resilience to meet climate, energy, and economic challenges. West Dover Congregational Church to host concert
WEST DOVER - The West Dover Congregational Church will be holding a special music festival on Friday, Sept. 27, at 4 p.m.
Organist Alan Dann and guitarist Sindy Hassig will be playing both old favorite hymns and new favorites. Dann's pieces will include selections from Handel, Bach, Pachelbel, and Mendelsson. Hassig will be playing and singing selections from artists like the Indigo Girls, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, and Leonard Cohen.
The church hopes that both local residents and those in town for ITVFest will feel welcomed to attend. There is no cost for admission, though donations are welcome. New England Coalition to hold annual meeting
BRATTLEBORO - New England Coalition on Nuclear Pollution will hold its 42nd annual membership meeting on Saturday, Sept. 28., at 4 p.m., at the Robert H. Gibson River Garden on Main Street.
Dr. Marvin Resnikoff and Brice Simon will be the featured speakers, addressing issues related to the decommissioning of Vermont Yankee.
Resnikoff is Senior Associate at Radioactive Waste Management Associates and is an international consultant on radioactive waste management issues. He is Project Director for dose reconstruction and risk assessment studies of radioactive waste facilities and transportation of radioactive materials. Dr. Resnikoff has concentrated exclusively on radioactive waste issues since 1974.
Simon, of Breton & Simon, PLC of Stowe, co-represents NEC before the Vermont Public Service Board in the current re-licensing docket.
There will also be music and a potluck supper.
VTel project is subject of Vernon meeting
VERNON - The Vernon Planning Commission will hold a forum on Monday, Sept. 30, at 6:30 p.m., to present the proposed VTel project on Pond Road to the public. The forum will be held downstairs in the Town Office building, located at 567 Governor Hunt Rd.
VTel proposed to build a 90 foot high wireless telecommunication facility at 407 Pond Rd. If installed, the proposed facility in Vernon will enable residential and business customers to use VTel's LTE service to access the Internet from wireless devices and is projected to bring wireless Internet service to approximately 1,200 homes and businesses in Vernon and the surrounding area.
It will also enable use of the Smart Grid technology for Green Mountain Power customers.
The public is strongly encouraged to come participate in the presentation. Elizabeth Kohler, an attorney from Downs, Rachlin, and Martin, is representing VTel for this project. She has more than 15 years of experience providing legal support in the telecommunications field. She will be leading the presentation and will also be available to answer any questions about the proposal.

Starting Oct. 1, you'll have all the information you need to find the plan that's right for you – all in one place. Putney Family Services and the Putney Walk In Clinic are certified as a Navigator organization. They can provide information on all the available plans, discuss the cost of the plans and the subsidies that might available, and assist in the enrollment process.

Free 5-week parenting class offered to Windham County parents
BRATTLEBORO - The Brattleboro Area Prevention Coalition (BAPC), which serves the five towns of Windham Southeast Supervisory District, is partnering with the Windham County Partnership for Success to offer the award-winning parenting class, Guiding Good Choices, on Wednesdays, from Oct. 2-30.
Guiding Good Choices is a free, five-session workshop that aids parents and/or caregivers of students in grades 4-8. The course covers how to set clear guidelines with both positive and negative consequences, how to control and express anger constructively, promote family bonds, and prepare kids with “refusal” skills for that time down the road when trouble may tempt them.
