The Brattleboro Union High School track team recognized two graduates with postseason honors at the school's graduation ceremonies on June 14.
Paxton Reed was awarded the Leroy Johnston Memorial Trophy, given by the Class of 1945 in memory of Johnston, who was a science teacher and coach at Brattleboro High School from 1929 to 1942.
The cup is awarded annually to a male student prominent in track and field who exemplifies the qualities of dependability and good citizenship which were so outstanding in the life of “Jonny” Johnston.
Ursula Casey was awarded the Verne L. Watson Cup and Award. It is given annually by the Class of 1933 in memory of its class president to the graduate who, in the coaches' view, best exemplifies sportsmanship and dedication in the pole vault, high jump, or hurdles.
The BUHS baseball and football programs honored graduate Tyler Higley with the Wally Carlson Memorial Award for his constant and conscientious effort in football and baseball.
Little League roundup
• The Brattleboro Area Baseball Camp, run by Al Libardoni, recently wrapped up its Little League camp.
Adam Newton was the line drive hitting champ and won the bunting contest. Alex Kendall won the ground ball fielding contest. Tyler Millerick and Newton were co-champs in the fly ball fielding contest. Staff named Millerick Camper of the Week.
Newton, Millerick, and Kendall were teammates on the Pirates, which finished the regular season undefeated in the Brattleboro Little League. You'll hear more about them as the Brattleboro All-Stars travel to Bennington for the opening game in the District 2 11-12-year-old Little League tournament on Saturday.
BOC offers paddling trips
The Brattleboro Outing Club has some summer and fall paddling trips on its schedule.
North Hartland Lake, in Hartford, is the first summer outing, on Sunday, July 7. This is a long, narrow reservoir with steep, forested hillsides at the east end of Quechee Gorge.
Next up is a day trip to Plum Island, Parker River National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) and Sandy Point State Reservation in Massachusetts on Saturday, Sept. 7.
Gale Meadows Pond in Windhall follows, on Wednesday, Sept. 11. It is also a Connecticut River Birding Trail Site, Southern Section.
The last paddle trip of the season is the fall foliage outing to Somerset Reservoir (west of Wilmington) on Sunday, Sept. 29.

SEVCA golf tournament raises $11,000
• Southeastern Vermont Community Action (SEVCA)'s 12th annual “Chipping Away at Poverty” Benefit Golf Tournament at the Brattleboro Country Club raised more than $11,000 June 21 to support low-income individuals and families in Windham and Windsor counties.
Tournament winners were: Raven Bay Associates, first place; Kinney Pike Insurance, second place; Mutual of America, third place; Men's Closest to the Pin: Peter Burke; Women's Longest Drive: Peg Maxfield; Men's Longest Drive: Steve Ward; Women's Closest to the Pin: Margo Bryce.
The winner of the Vegas Hole contest and raffle was Kathryn Burke, who donated her winnings to SEVCA. Winner of the 50/50 raffle was Margo Bryce.
Golf tournament to benefit at-risk youth
• Kurn Hattin Homes invites golfers of all skill levels to enjoy a fun day of golf, great food, contests, and prizes while helping to improve the lives of children in need.
The 22nd Annual Kurn Hattin Golf Classic will be held July 17 at the Keene Country Club. The event benefits children at Kurn Hattin Homes in Westminster, a year-round home and school for boys and girls in need of temporary care as a result of family tragedy or social or economic hardship.
Registration of $135 per golfer includes golf, cart, lunch, and dinner. There are three hole-in-one prizes: a 2013 Toyota Camry donated by Durand Toyota Ford, a $10,000 Certificate of Deposit donated by People's United Bank, and a $5,000 gift certificate donated by M.J. Harrington Jewelers.
First, second, and third place tournament winners (gross and net) receive Pro Shop gift certificates for their whole team. Additional individual prizes include closest to pin and longest drive. The event begins at 10 a.m., with a lunch at 11 a.m., and tee-off at noon. The day concludes with dinner and an auction. The Brattleboro Elks remained undefeated in Division 1 after last week's games at 9-0. Zooters moved into first in Division 2 with a 5-3 record. Aerodyne still tops Division 3 with a 6-1 record, while Falvey Pools continues to lead Division 4 at 10-2.
