GUILFORD — Broad Brook Grange in Guilford has announced that a special, one-time college scholarship will be awarded this month in memory of noted citizen Marie (Sally) Carpenter, who died this past January.
Mrs. Carpenter's family designated the Grange, of which she was a longtime member, as recipient of memorial gifts, and the Grange membership voted to use those donations to create this scholarship.
Marie Carpenter became Guilford Town Clerk in 1971, a post she held until her retirement in 1984, after which she served a period as Assistant Town Clerk.
Guilford honored her in 1983 by dedicating their Town Report to her. She was honored in 2000 with the Secretary of State's Vermont Public Service Award. She was particularly devoted to the Town's children, and was an ardent supporter of education.
Broad Brook Grange annually awards a scholarship to a Guilford student who has graduated from both Guilford Central School and Brattleboro Union High School, to assist in funding that student's continued education at a two or four-year college or vocational school.
This year, the regular Grange scholarship of $750 will be awarded, as usual. This second, one-time Carpenter Scholarship, in the same amount, will also be awarded.
The recipients will be announced, and the scholarships presented, on BUHS Senior Awards Night, on the evening before commencement.
