WARDSBORO — The Friends of the Wardsboro Library are sponsoring two big events on Memorial Day weekend: the Annual Plant Sale and a Barn Open House, both Saturday, May 25.
Admission and parking are free for both events, which will be held rain or shine.
The annual plant sale is a fundraiser for the Friends of the Wardsboro Library, a non-profit organization that supports the Wardsboro Public Library.
The plant sale, from 9 a.m. to noon, will take place at 170 Main St., on the front lawn of the Wardsboro Library and on the Wardsboro Town Common, at Route 100 and Main Street.
Perennials, hearty transplants, colorful annuals, Gilfeather turnip seedlings, and much more will be on display for shoppers. Members of the Friends, and Jenna Konesko, master gardener and library trustee, will be available to assist gardeners with their selections.
Erica Bowman, landscape architect and owner of Andromeda Designs of Jamaica, will give a 10 a.m. garden talk on managing invasive plants. Bowman has volunteered her expertise to help the Friends design planting areas around the library building. The existing gardens are part of her master plan, and more gardens are in the works.
A garden raffle features a garden arbor hand-crafted by Albert Litchfield, owner of Litchfield Woodworks of Townshend. You can buy and print your own raffle tickets from www.friendsofwardsborolibrary.org, or buy them at the Plant Sale or at the Wardsboro Library. The winning ticket will be drawn at 1 p.m. at the plant sale; the winner need not be present to win.
The Friends and the Wardsboro Library Trustees also plan a Barn Open House at 170 Main St. during the plant sale, from 9 a.m. to noon. Visitors can tour the new library space in the renovated 1840s barn attached to the Wardsboro Library. Call 802-896-3416 for details.
The Wardsboro Library trustees will also hold their annual bake sale on the Town Common on May 25, beginning at 9 a.m. and running until all the goodies are sold. On the Common, shoppers will find the Friends' Flower Cart filled with annuals as well as the Bake Sale tent, a must-see before moving down Main Street to the library lawn for the Plant Sale.
Raffle tickets will also be on sale on the Common for the Friends' annual “Best Raffle Ever.” This year's “Best Raffle Ever” item is an Old Town kayak, provided by Norse House Ski and Sport in Bondville. The winning ticket will be drawn on Aug. 17. The winner need not be present for the drawing.
