BRATTLEBORO — I'm writing to thank Richard Henke for his article on my March/April art exhibit at the West Village Meeting House in Brattleboro [Arts, March 20]. I'm very proud of my heritage and vision in my artistic quest, which I think Mr. Henke covered beautifully.
I did find, however, what I thought were some very misleading claims.
I work with children and, because the creative process is so important for all children, I just want readers to know that as a child, I was always a “willing participant,” as far as putting a pencil in my hand with a pad of paper. No adult had to force me; I was self-entertained for hours.
Most of my previous exhibits (though not all) were in local restaurants, stores, and cafés.
I did have a natural gift for geometry and visuals, but it was not the only strong area in my educational background.
Finally, my “child” Raina is actually now 29 and works in research out in Oregon. It was helpful as a single mom while raising her to work right at the kitchen table - the center of all the action!
Again, my humble gratitude for Mr. Henke's thoughtful and insightful coverage.
