Open Music Collective announced classes for spring 2013 semester

BRATTLEBORO — Open Music Collective launches its spring 2013 semester Jan. 28 with classes for all levels of musicianship.

The semester runs for 10 classes, registration is ongoing, and limited scholarships are available.

Jazz ensembles resume with offerings on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 5 p.m., and a special Saturday morning class for those under 18. These classes will study classic recordings and compositions, and focus on “playing the changes” and improving listening and cooperative skills.

Monday piano classes, in a new piano lab, offer group and individual instruction in basic chords, bass lines, and accompaniment.

The jazz vocal repertoire class returns as well, focusing on learning songs, writing charts, working with rhythm sections, counting off tunes, and improvising — both for standards and bossa novas.

High school and college students are encouraged to enroll.

On Thursdays, Ben Carr teaches ukulele ensemble. Classes focus on singing, picking melodies, strumming, and ensemble playing. No prior music experience or knowledge necessary. This is a great introduction to music and the ukulele.
