Last week for Merry Mulch pickups

BRATTLEBORO - The Brattleboro Union High School Music Department's Merry Mulch program is in its final week. This program offers Christmas tree collection to Brattleboro residents who request it.

Now in its 22nd year, Merry Mulch is endorsed by the Vermont Department of Agriculture as well as the New Hampshire/Vermont Christmas Tree Association. For a $10 donation, members of the band and chorus will transport undecorated trees from homes to a community garden in West Brattleboro where they will be chipped into mulch to be used by the community.

The final tree pick up will occur on Saturday, Jan, 19. All pick-ups must be prearranged by calling one of the following numbers by Thursday, Jan. 17: 802-387-3794, 802-254-3360, or 802-579-1577. Proceeds will benefit a planned trip to New York in May, 2013.

Winter Harvest Health Coupons available at BF Farmers' Market

BELLOWS FALLS - On Friday, Jan. 18, the Bellows Falls Farmers' Market will hold its third winter market of the season. The market will be held indoors at the train station, just across the street from the regular location, 4-7 p.m.

The market will run from November through March the third Friday of each month.

Winter Harvest Health Coupons have arrived at the market. For every $2 one spends at the market on a EBT/3SquaresVT card, it will be matched dollar for dollar with Harvest Health Coupons up to $10. These coupons must be spent at the market when they are received. The coupons will be available throughout the winter season.

Brattleboro Town School Board to present community forum on school safety

BRATTLEBORO - The Brattleboro Town School Board invites community members, especially parents with elementary school children, to attend a forum about school safety.

This discussion is a response to the recent tragedy in Newtown, Conn., and community members' requests for additional safety measures.

The forum is Wednesday, Jan. 23, at Academy School on Western Avenue at 6:30 p.m.

Participants can share their thoughts and opinions on how the district can alter or improve its security protocols and the way it responds to emergencies. Representatives from the school administration and local first responders will be present.

Brattleboro Time Trade hosts its first annual meeting

BRATTLEBORO - The Brattleboro Time Trade (BTT) will hold its first annual meeting on Sunday, Jan. 27, from 3 to 5 p.m, in Room 2 East of the Marlboro Graduate Center, 28 Vernon St.

The meeting will feature the election of the Time Trade Board for 2013 by BTT members. It will also include a keynote address by Marlboro College instructor Meg Mott, who will talk about the comparisons between Time Trade and the localvore movement, and how they return us to very simple transactions that perhaps can replace exploitative relationships with ones of interdependence.

In addition to BTT members, the public is also welcome to attend this free event to learn more about the progress of the BTT over the past year. There will be light refreshments, and Time Trade members are welcome to bring a finger food offering in exchange for Time Trade hours. Saxtons River Rec issues exercise challenge

SAXTONS RIVER - The Saxtons River Rec Area has issued a health challenge to help encourage and reward those New Year's resolutions to get out and exercise more.

The Rec is sponsoring Health Challenge 2013, with the goal that participants will do 2013 minutes of exercise by March 31, or about 25 minutes each day. Prizes will be awarded for each age level at the end of each month, and a grand prize will be awarded at the completion of the challenge.

Participants can enroll in the challenge for a fee of $10, or $35 for a family or team of four. The Rec sends them an exercise log and prize coupons that they turn in as they reach various goals along the way to their final goal of 2013. Any type of exercise qualifies. Age groups are 14 and younger or 15 and older.

Free class offered at Brattleboro Area Hospice

BRATTLEBORO - This February, Brattleboro Area Hospice will offer a four-week class for those wishing to explore issues connected to death and dying.

Led by Bettina Berg, the Volunteer and Education Coordinator at Brattleboro Area Hospice, the curriculum will include material used in the training of hospice and bereavement volunteers who serve families in the community facing terminal illness and death. The class will provide opportunities to explore one's own attitudes and feelings about death and dying, as well as to learn about how one might support a friend or neighbor during a time of loss.

The class will meet on four Thursday afternoons: Feb. 7, 14, 21, and 28, from 4- 6:30 p.m., at BAH, 191 Canal St. Class size is limited and registration is required. For questions or to register, call Berg at 802-257-0775, ext. 102.
