Obituaries

• Herminia “Minnie” Carrasquillo, 99, of Brattleboro. Died Nov. 3 at Pine Heights Nursing Home. Memorial information: Services for Mrs. Carrasquillo were private with interment in Meetinghouse Hill Cemetery. Donations to the Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund, in care of The American Red Cross Windham County Chapter, 81 High St., Brattleboro, VT 05301.

• Elizabeth Liz Anne Myers, 68, of West Dover. Died Nov. 7 at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington following a courageous battle with ovarian cancer. Wife of Paul Myers. Mother of Christine Anne Wrampe and her husband, Peter, of Windham, N.H., and Andrew Paul Myers and his wife, Chelsie, of Baton Rouge, La. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of the late Frederick and Ruth (Haller) Burkley, she received her education in Franklin Square, L.I. schools, graduating from H. Frank Carey High School and then attending Hofstra University where she was a music major, concentrating in voice. She worked in real estate for many years in Ridgefield, Conn. She also managed an office equipment store and a Pepperidge Farms store, both in Ridgefield. She and her husband moved to Vermont in 2001. She was a former member of the Wilmington Congregational Church until the church merger with the West Dover Congregational Church, where she was a very vital and active member. She was an accomplished pianist and loved all kinds of music including musicals, opera, and Broadway shows. She loved playing tennis, flower gardening and was an exceptional cook. She cherished times spent with her family and loved spending time at her home in Bermuda. Memorial information: A memorial service will be held on Dec. 1, at 11 a.m., at the West Dover Congregational Church. Pastor Emily Heath will officiate. Interment will be private. Donations to the Deerfield Valley Rescue Squad or to the West Dover Congregational Church, in care of Covey-Allen & Shea Funeral Home, P.O. Box 215, Wilmington, VT 05363.

• Eve Olitski, 64, of West Hartford, Conn. Died Nov. 5 at home. Daughter of the late Jules Olitski, a renowned artist, and Gladys (Katz) Olin Pactovis, also an artist. Sister of Lauren Poster and her husband, Bradley, of Marlboro. She spent her life in the arts, as a graphic illustrator, painter, printmaker, poet and comedic writer, as well as stand-up performer. She held a BFA in Theater Design from NYU Tisch School of the Arts and an MFA in Creative Writing from Columbia School of the Arts. In 1978, she was awarded a National Endowment for her one-act play, Don't Jump! For years she was a regular contributor of pen and ink drawings to The New Yorker, as well as producing the cover for that magazine in 1985. She published illustrations for Harper Collins, MacMillan Publishers, The Atlantic Monthly, The Baltimore Sun, Ms. magazine, and numerous others. She has exhibited her paintings throughout New England. She has often given of her time to charitable organizations, most recently teaching poetry and printmaking at Chrysalis in Hartford, Conn. Memorial information: A funeral service took place Nov. 9 at the cemetery of Congregation Shir He Harim of Brattleboro. Friends and family will come together to celebrate her life and artwork at EBK Gallery, 43 Crossroads Plaza in West Hartford, Conn., on Sunday, Nov. 18, from 3 to 5 p.m. Donations to Connecticut AIDS Resource Coalition (CARC) of Hartford, Conn., at www.ctaidscoalition.org, or the Hartford Jazz Society at www.hartfordjazzsociety.com.

• In Brattleboro (Memorial Hospital), Sept. 25, 2012, a daughter, Emma Rose Aplin, to Courteney Cookson and Todd Aplin Jr. of Brattleboro; granddaughter to Michelle Aplin, Todd Aplin, Penny LaGoy, and Dale McTaggart; great-granddaughter to Geraldine Nadeau, Bert LaGoy, and Phyllis LaGoy.

College news

• Jacob Huston of Brookline was inducted into Ithaca College's Oracle Honor Society in November. First-year students who maintain a GPA that puts them in the top 10 percent of all students in their school throughout their first full academic year are invited into the society. Huston is majoring in history in the college's School of Humanities and Sciences.

• Karen Clark, an academic coordinator at the Community College of Vermont's (CCV) Brattleboro academic center, was named 2012 Educator of the Year at the Vermont Educational Opportunity Programs (VEOP) conference on October 9. The award is presented annually to a faculty, staff member, tutor, or administrator who has made significant contributions to furthering educational opportunities for VEOP students. Since 2002, Clark has worked with students in CCV-Brattleboro's TRiO Student Support Services Program, a federally funded program that helps students reach their academic potential and meet their educational and career goals.

Awards

• On Nov. 2, Addie Minott and Don McLean, members of the Guilford 250th Anniversary Planning Committee, accepted the Award for Excellence in Educational Outreach from the Vermont League of Local Historical Societies and Museums at the organization's annual meeting in Woodstock. The award recognized the work of the Committee in carrying out a year-long celebration of the town's history with events almost weekly, from ringing in the year with church bells to a New Year's Ball at the end. With activities contributed by many town organizations, strong local financial backing, and the effort of countless volunteers, the schedule included an original play with original music, concerts, dances, a gala weekend with parade and fireworks, history walks, an art exhibit, races, community meals, holiday celebrations, movie nights, talks, and many kinds of gatherings. Prime movers included the Guilford Historical Society, the Broad Brook Grange, the Guilford Free Library, Friends of Music at Guilford , Guilford Community Church, the town, and the Central School.

Transitions

• Julie Potter of Brattleboro has been appointed as general manager of Strolling of the Heifers. In this newly established full-time position, Potter will be in charge of all Stroll event planning and coordination including parking, transportation, logistics, schedules, utilities, sound systems, safety and security, merchandise sales, vendor relationships, and volunteer communications. For the last 7 years, Potter served as chief financial officer and director of client services for Global Cow, a Brattleboro-based company that organizes agricultural exchange visits with foreign countries, as well agricultural tours within Vermont. She also writes a weekly food column for the Brattleboro Reformer, and will continue to do so. She has volunteered for the Farm To School and garden committees at the Academy School. The Stroll's previous general manager, Martin Langeveld, will serve as coordinator of the organization's annual Slow Living Summit and as Stroll marketing director. Potter lives in Brattleboro with her husband Jon, the Reformer's arts and entertainment editor, and their children Marielle and Margot.
