NECCA offers ‘Circus for Survivors’

BRATTLEBORO — Forest Moon: Celebrating Cancer Survivorship and the New England Center for Circus Arts (NECCA) will present three “Circus for Survivors” workshops through the end of the year.

“We're excited to partner with NECCA to help cancer survivors and their family members have a little circus fun and improve their physical and emotional well-being,” said Richard Ewald, executive director of Forest Moon.

The free sessions are open to anyone living with a cancer diagnosis at any stage; participants may come alone or bring a family member or friend. The programs will include juggling, low balancing wires, and the use of aerial fabrics and trapezes.

The sessions will be facilitated by Suzanne Rappaport and Pam Roberts.

Rappaport has an M.S. in occupational therapy and teaches and coaches circus arts. She has developed programs using the circus arts to increase mind and body awareness.

Roberts, an 18-year cancer survivor, is Forest Moon's program director and is a certified yoga instructor.

Participants are encouraged to try the circus at the level of adventure and ability they choose. NECCA circus coaches and friends will be on hand as volunteers to assist. Activities will be suitable for all abilities and are wheelchair accessible.

The program dates are Saturday, Oct. 20; Saturday, Nov. 10; and Sunday, Dec. 2. The December session is a special family session open to adults and children 8 years and up.

Each session will be held from 2:30 to 4 p.m. at NECCA's studios at 74 Cotton Mill Hill.

Space is limited and preregistration is required by calling Pam Roberts at 413-625-2402 or emailing her at [email protected].
