Next Stage Arts presents ‘Shrink Rap 2’ series that merges film and psychiatry

PUTNEY — Next Stage Arts announces the return of Shrink Rap, the film series hosted by Brattleboro psychologist and author Dr. Martha Straus.

Shrink Rap 2 debuts on Oct. 4 and consists of four films each featuring a therapist/patient relationship: Analyze This (Robert De Niro, Billy Crystal), Benny and Joon (Johnny Depp, Mary Stuart Masterson), The Wackness (Josh Peck, Ben Kingsley), and Carefree (Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers).

Straus will briefly introduce each film and, following the film, will facilitate an informal conversation about the treatment as portrayed in the movie as well as broader questions of therapeutic boundaries, insight, and transformation.

Next Stage Cinema presents a wide range of films, including blockbusters and independent and foreign films. November's series will feature documentaries beginning on Nov. 1, when Next Stage will welcome back independent filmmaker Joel Katz to present his newest film, White: A Memoir In Color, in which he examines issues of race through his own life experience.

Shrink Rap films start at 7 p.m. and show on Thursdays in October: 4, 11, 18, and 25. Admission for all films is by donation, $5 suggested. For detailed schedule and film information or to be on the mailing list, visit www.nextstagearts.org.
