DUMMERSTON — Apples and apple pies are an important part of fall festivals all over Windham County, but arguably the biggest celebration of apples in the area takes place in Dummerston on Sunday, Oct. 7 at the annual Apple Pie Festival.
On that day, more than 1,500 apple pies made by the bakers and friends of the Dummerston Congregational Church in Dummerston Center will be offered for sale starting at 10 a.m.
Pies are available whole, or by the slice, until 5 p.m. or until they are sold out - which usually happens by mid-afternoon.
In addition to pie, an all-you-can eat pancake breakfast is served from 7:30 to 11 a.m. at the Fire Station in Dummerston Center, with lunch served by the Evening Star Grange.
Fresh doughnuts and hot cider will be on sale, along with homemade ice cream and Grafton cheddar to top your slice of pie.
The annual Evening Star Grange Craft Fair, which runs from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., features 35 booths of handmade items from local crafters.

On the other side of town, Scott Farm on Kipling Road presents a lower-key celebration of the apple with its annual Heirloom Apple Tasting Day.
Orchard manager Ezekiel Goodband will offer everyone a free taste of a select group of apples while sharing apple lore and history on the 70 varieties of apples grown on the farm. Mixed bags of heirloom apples will be available for sale.
Tastings will be held on Oct. 6-8 at 10 a.m., noon, and 2 p.m. each day. For more information, call the farm at 802-254-6868 or visit www.scottfarmvermont.com.
