• Wallace E. Albro, 86, of Walpole, N.H. Died July 26 at Genesis Health Care in Keene, N.H. Husband of Alice (May) Richmond Albro for nearly 65 years. Father of Dennis Albro and his wife, Debbie, of Westminster. Born in Coventry, R.I., the son of the late Wilford and Mini (Fiske) Albro, he was a graduate of Coventry High School and served in the Army during World War II. He worked for Dairy Transport as a truck driver and owned and operated a contracting business, specializing in concrete work. He owned and operated Cheever Tire, from which he retired. He was a member of the Masons and the American Legion in Alstead, N.H. He was also the owner and crew chief of the 9NH modified race team for 45 years, racing all over New England. Memorial information: A graveside memorial service was held Aug. 4 at the Walpole Cemetery.
• Reynold L. “Ray” Burrington, 90, of Vernon. Died July 14 at Vernon Green Nursing Home. Born in Brattleboro, the son of the late Harold and Gladys Tenney Burrington, he served in the Army during World War II in the 100th Infantry Division and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He worked as a truck driver for most of his life for St. Johnsbury Trucking, Puffer Transport, and Skip Root. He lived in Brattleboro for much of his life. He is survived by many nieces and nephews and his dear friend, Lois Pantrini. Memorial information: A graveside memorial service was held Aug. 3 at Meeting House Hill Cemetery in Brattleboro.
• Russell W. Ellis, 91, of Putney. Husband of the late Milly Kapherr Ellis for 63 years. Father of Jaki Ellis and her husband, Andy Cook, of Brunswick, Maine; Peter Ellis and his wife, Maureen Scanlon, of Austin, Texas; and Christine Ellis and her husband, Marc Cohen, of Putney. Brother of Emmons Ellis of Winchester, Mass., Robert Ellis of Marshfield, Mass., and the late Don and Bill Ellis. Born in Cambridge, Mass., the son of Lila Fair Webb and Artemas Russell Ellis, he grew up in Winchester, Mass., and completed his high school education at the Browne & Nichols School in Cambridge. He then entered Harvard University, graduating with the class of 1942. He played on Harvard's tennis team and was a member of the Pi Eta club. World War II began in the middle of his senior year at Harvard, and he entered military service immediately following graduation. He served as an officer in a field artillery battalion of the 94th Infantry Division, with which he would serve for over three years. After the war ended, the 94th was given a non-military assignment in Czechoslovakia. During this time, he traveled to see Paris on a freight train. This is where he met and, later, became engaged to, the woman he would marry, who was working at the Officers Club there. After returning from Europe, the couple first settled in Cambridge, Mass., and he began studying at the Harvard Business School. Milly saw a notice about the Experiment in International Living on a poster, which resulted in them both leading a student group to Holland. In 1948, they moved to Putney and he began working as the business manager for the Experiment. After 29 years as business manager/treasurer, he resigned from the Experiment and took a job as a trust officer with Vermont National Bank. When he retired in 1990, the Ellises began living half the year in Fort Myers, Fla., and half the year in their Putney home. Ten years later, they moved into Shellpoint Retirement Community, also in Fort Myers, where they made many new friends and enjoyed numerous activities on nearby Sanibel Island. His passions were tennis, dancing, and writing. He continued to play tennis well into his 80s, when a shoulder injury prompted a switch to golf. Russ and Milly loved to dance together and helped organize the West Hill Cabaret in Putney. Many years later, they helped organize the first dance at Shellpoint Retirement Community in Florida. He wrote extensively about his family, travels and tennis. Memorial information: A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 11 at 2 p.m., at his home at 89 Watt Rd, in Putney. • David M. Harvey, 63, of Brattleboro. Died July 25 following a long battle with cancer. Husband of Bonnie (Thomas) Harvey. Father of David M. Harvey Jr. of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; and Heather Rossi of Townshend. Brother of Wayne R. Harvey of Chesterfield, N.H., Ellery A. and Gertrud Harvey of Pekin, Ill., Kenneth A. and Claudia Harvey of Winchester, N.H.; and William A. and Eydie Harvey of Brattleboro. Born in Brattleboro, the son of the late Kenneth A. Grace (Freeman) Harvey, he was a Harley Davidson enthusiast, riding his own Harley in his younger days. • Charlotte LaShier, 82, formerly of Hinsdale, N.H. Died July 31 at Applewood Care Center in Winchester, N.H., where she has resided for the past 18 months. Wife of the late Robert LaShier for 30 years. Father of Gary LaShier and his wife, Shiela, of Greenfield, Mass. Sister of Helen Slate of Brattleboro, Chester Boroski of Richfield, N.C., and Paul Boroski of Claremont, N.H., and the late Edward, Francis, and Stanley Boroski, and Frances Merton, Viola Drane, Teresa Waterman, and Dorothy Bokum. Born in Hinsdale, the daughter of the late Steve and Mary (Salinski) Boroski, he was raised and educated in Hinsdale, leaving her schooling at an early age to help with her family. For many years, she was a machine operator at Gratton & Weeks Paper Mill in Hinsdale. Previously, she worked for Bridgeport Metal, also in Hinsdale. Most recently, she served as housekeeper for St. Joseph's Church, as well as caretaker for the church, rectory and grounds. She loved life and had a warm and giving heart that touched all those around her. Children were the love of her life and she cherished every minute she could spend with them. She also enjoyed playing Bingo in her spare time. She was fondly known at Applewood as the “Polish Princess.” A devout Catholic, she was a lifelong communicant of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Hinsdale. • Donald Harvey Masure, 77, of Rockingham. Died Aug. 3 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. Husband of the late Elaine B. (Densmore) Masure for nearly 54 years. Father of Warren Masure and his wife, Shirley, of Springfield, and Wade Masure and his wife, Katrina, of Bellows Falls. Brother of Marilyn Beam of Ascutney, Joyce Richards of Rockingham, and the late Charlotte Stocker. Born in Sutton, Vt., the eldest son of the late Lewis and Margaret (Grady) Masure, he attended Peacham Academy. Following graduation in 1952, he served for three years in the Army. He was a truck driver for St. Johnsbury and Preston Trucking, retiring in 1997. He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, the American Legion, and the Teamsters. He enjoyed watching Boston Red Sox games. He loved his garden, enjoyed traveling with his family, and always looked forward to hunting season. • Carol Piercy Oxx, 78, of Richmond, N.H. Died July 16. Wife of Gordon Dixon Oxx Jr. Mother of Daniel Oxx of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Kathryn Oxx and her husband, Chuck, of Cincinnati, Ohio; and Stephen Oxx and his wife Courtenay of Arlington, Mass. Born in Schenectady, N.Y., the daughter of the late Helen Jones and Carl Albert Piercy, she grew up in Ballston Lake, N.Y., and graduated from Ballston Spa High School in 1951. After earning a two-year degree from Green Mountain College, she worked as a secretary at the General Electric research lab in Schenectady, where she met her husband. She left work to raise her family, moving to Cleveland and then Cincinnati following corporate transfers. In Cincinnati, she returned to school and earned her Bachelor's in Geriatric Social Work from the University of Cincinnati in 1976, of which she was very proud. She worked at the Salem Senior Center in Cincinnati, and became the director of the Brattleboro Senior Center, when she and her husband moved to Brattleboro. The Oxxs then retired to Richmond, where they lived for 18 years. Memorial information: A memorial service will be held Saturday, Aug. 11, at the Veteran's Hall in Richmond. • George T. Pangelinan, 62, at Hinsdale, N.H. Died Aug. 1 at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital. Husband of Lourdes Sablan for 33 years. Father of Nathan; Gerren and his wife, Janet; Shelby Consuelo and her companion of seven years, Greg Pelloni, all of Hinsdale; Christopher Murphy of Jay, Fla.; and the late Kellie Murphy. Brother of Winnie Borja and her husband, Larry, of North Carolina; June Arceo and Amelia Acfalle of Guam; and Joseph Pangelinan and his wife, Doris, of Washington state. Born in Tamuning, Guam, the son of the late Jose and Isabel (Aguero) Pangelinan, he was raised and educated in Yona, Guam, and was a graduate of George Washington High School, Class of 1968. He served in the Army for 20 years, and after he retired from the Army, he moved to Hinsdale in 1992 with his family. He went to work for C&S Grocers Wholesale in Brattleboro. At the time of his death, he had been employed as a corrections officer for the Cheshire County House of Corrections in Marlborough, N.H., a position he held for the past 17 years. He was well respected by his colleagues and known for his solid work ethic. He was also a devoted family man who cherished time spent with his family. • Franklin E. Perry, 91, of Saxtons River. Died July 28 at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington. Husband of Beatrice E. (French) Perry for 55 years. Father of Ronald Perry of Brandon, Edward Perry of Bellows Falls, Barbara Duprey of Rutland, Karen Fortune of Bellows Falls, and Mary Schofield and her husband, Paul Schofield Jr., of Chester. Stepfather of Wayne Whidden and his wife, Lois, of Saxtons River. Brother of Richard Perry of Bethel and the late Gerould Perry. Born in Grafton, the son of the late Edward J. and Gladys F. (Torrey) Perry, he attended school in Plymouth and Athens, and received his high school diploma from Bellows Falls Union High School when he was 81. Over the years, he was employed by James Trucking, the town of Rockingham, F.W. Whitcomb, and retired from Cheever Tire. A veteran of World War II, he volunteered in the Army in 1942. He served in Northern France, the Rhineland, the Ardennes, and Central Europe. As a medic during the war, he worked in the emergency room of the 107th Evacuation Hospital and later became an ambulance driver. He was in the Battle of the Bulge and earned five medals, including the Good Conduct Medal, and four battle stars. He received an honorable discharge in 1946. He was a member of the VFW, the American Legion, Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge, as well as many gas engine clubs and several collector clubs. Over his lifetime, he enjoyed hunting, snowmobiling, attending gas engine shows, visiting friends and family, and Saturday-night dancing with his wife well into their 80s. • Jeffrey Lee Powers, 56, of Dummerston. Died July 29 at his home. Fiance of Vicki Freckleton of Dummerston. Brother of Lester W. Powers, Jr. of Pinellas Park, Fla.; James O. Powers of Tucson, Ariz; and Timothy Powers of Newfane; Born in Brattleboro, the son of Lester and and the late Winifred (LaValley) Powers, Sr., he was raised and educated in Brattleboro. He had been employed as a logger for Calvin Powling Jr. Logging of Newfane. Previously, he worked for more than 20 years for the Richard Hamilton family who owned and operated the Skyline Restaurant on Route 9. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time outdoors. He was known for his generous spirit of giving, and was always willing to help anyone in need. He will also be remembered for his strong work ethic and devotion to his family. • Lester William Pritting, 92, formerly of Townshend. Died July 30 at the Vernon Green Nursing Home. Husband of Florence “Florie” Pritting for 69 years. Father of Diane Miles and her husband, Joseph; Russell Pritting and Nancy Shulman; and William and Randi Pritting, Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of the late John Pritting and Mary Platz. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the US Army. After being honorably discharged. he and his wife moved to Vermont. • Ronald L. Torrey, 78, of Mendon, Mass. Died Aug. 1 at his home. Husband of the late Barbara (Brin) Torrey for 42 years. Companion of Barbara Jenness of Mendon. Father of Sandra Torrey of Northampton, Mass., and the late Allen Torrey. Born in Easthampton Mass., son of the late Robert and Evelyn (Gauthier) Torrey, he lived in Easthampton, Mass., and Hinsdale, N.H., before moving to Mendon. He served in the Marine Corps during the Korean conflict, and was later employed for the Easthampton Parks Department, Tubed Products and Manchester Hardware in Easthampton, and Fireside True Value in Brattleboro. He was a member of the Jaycees in Easthampton, and American Legion Post 5 and Carl M. Dessaint VFW Post 1034 in Brattleboro.
