Brattleboro Police to hold annual bike/abandoned property auction
BRATTLEBORO - The annual bike and abandoned property auction will take place on Saturday, July 14, at the Brattleboro Police Department.
A preview the bicycles and other property abandoned during 2011 will be held on Friday, July 13, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. If you believe the police may have your property, bring in a bill of sale, receipt, or other proof of ownership. Only those with proof of ownership will be allowed to view the items at this time.
On Saturday, the public is invited to view all the abandoned property between 10-11:30 a.m. Sealed bids will be opened at 11:30 a.m., and items will be sold to the highest bidder. You must be present at the bid opening, and only cash or checks will be accepted for payment. If the high bidder is not present, the item will be offered to the next-highest bidder.
All sales are final and all items are sold as-is.
Public welcome at Grad School Capstone Project fairs
BRATTLEBORO - Marlboro College Graduate School will host two fairs at which graduating students will present and discuss their Capstone Projects.
Capstone Projects demand that graduating students fuse the knowledge they have gained across the breadth of their studies at the Grad School and then apply it in a new and creative fashion taking it to the “next level.”
Visitors are encouraged to talk with the students about the projects and to critique them - allowing the future graduates to gain objective, supportive feedback that will lead to further refinements.
For those in the Master's programs in Health Care Administration, Educational Technology, and Information Technologies as well as the Bachelor's completion program in Managing Information Systems, the fair will be on Saturday, July 14, from noon to 2:30 p.m. The MBA and Master's in Managing Mission-Driven Organizations fair will be on the following Saturday, July 21, and will run from 1-2 p.m.
Both of these events are free, and the public is encouraged to attend. Both will be held at Marlboro College Graduate School, 28 Vernon St.
Athens to host community picnic on July 15
ATHENS - The Brick Meeting House lawn will be the site of a community picnic on Sunday, July 15.
This event is being sponsored by the Athens Historic Preservation Society (AHPS) as part of an effort to raise awareness and community support for efforts to preserve and restore this historic building. It follows a successful benefit concert on June 29, the first public event held in the Brick Meeting House in quite some time.
Festivities begin at 1 p.m. with typical picnic games and activities, and a cook-out offering hot dogs and hamburgers with all the fixings, cold drinks, and more. Folks are invited to bring a picnic salad or dessert to share, similar to the familiar practice at the monthly Athens Community Suppers sponsored by Grafton Cares.
AHPS is asking for $5 per person, or $15 maximum for families with children under 13, to help offset event costs so that existing funds can be dedicated to the mission of the AHPS which is to restore and conserve the historic buildings and information of Athens.
The Meetinghouse is historically significant to this region, particularly for the 13 towns which formed a group for religious purposes, including Athens, Grafton, Rockingham, Townshend, Londonderry, Weston, Chester, Acton, Springfield, Landgrove, Windham, Putney, and Mt. Holly. These towns comprised the “Old Athens Circuit,” through which circuit preachers traveled to perform religious services.
For years after regular religious services ceased at the Meetinghouse, the building was maintained by funds raised at summer events held for speeches by various politicians and other notables.
The Brick Meeting House will be open for tours during the picnic. Also, a variety of historic photos will be on display for attendees to view and share memories or connections to the people, places and events depicted. For more information, call Sherry at 802-869-2141.
Prevention Coalition offers free parenting workshop in Bellows Falls
BELLOWS FALLS - The Greater Falls Prevention Coalition (GFPC) is once again offering the “Guiding Good Choices” parenting workshop.
This workshop, led by GFPC's Parent Outreach Coordinator, provides support and skill-building for parents of kids ages 8-13. The class focuses on setting boundaries, monitoring, communication and dealing with conflict. Childcare and light food are available.

BMH hosts Safe Sitter workshop for teens
BRATTLEBORO - The Brattleboro Memorial Hospital Department of Community Health and Hospital Education presents a Safe Sitter workshop for boys and girls, ages 11-13, on Friday, July 27.
Safe Sitter classes have helped thousands of adolescents across the country learn basic lifesaving and safety techniques, helping them become more confident caregivers. Students will learn how to set-up babysitting services as a business, behavior management, child care essentials, injury management, and much more.
The program takes place from 9 a.m. to 4:10 p.m. in the Brew Barry Conference Center at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, located at 17 Belmont Ave. Class size is limited to eight students and the fee is $45 per person. Call 802-257-8325 to register or receive more information.
One Click Digital Audiobook program available at Brooks Memorial Library
BRATTLEBORO - Going on vacation this summer and need something good to listen to? The Friends of Brooks Memorial Library have funded new eAudio access with One Click Digital Audiobook from Recorded Books.
The One Click Digital Audiobook Program offers patron access to high-quality downloadable Recorded Books titles. All titles are iPod, iPad, and iPhone compatible and available all of the time.
This program includes titles for adults, children and young adults and includes a variety of fiction and non-fiction titles. The Core List of 3,400 titles (2,500 adult titles; 900 for youth) will always be available. No holds or waiting lists required, and new content is added each month with 30 adult and seven youth titles.
