Concert celebrates Shirley Harris Crockett and her work

GUILFORD — A memorial celebration of the children's stories of the late Rev. Shirley Harris Crockett will be held at the Guilford Community Church, United Church of Christ, on Saturday, May 26 at 7 p.m.

The event will mark the publication of “I Invite the Children to Come Forward,” a collection of 325 children's stories gleaned from tapes of Sunday services during the 22-year-long ministries of Rev. Shirley Crockett and her husband Rev. Larrimore Crockett.

Four Guilford Community Church storytellers will recite stories from the collection. Peter Amidon will tell “What the Angelic Lobster Taught”; Larrimore Crockett and Lise Sparrow will tell “Spring Peepers”; Margaret Dale Barrand will tell “Beautiful, Blue and Something To Do,” which celebrates Pentecost and features Pooh and Piglet puppets; and Andy Davis will tell “Rusty's Vision,” which commemorates the 1969 moon-landing.

Organizers will play a recording of Shirley Crockett telling her story “Digby the Whale.”

Music will be provided by the duo Coracle, with Cynthia Hughes on Celtic harp, and John Crockett on cello and Celtic whistles.

Katie Shay, Shirley Crockett's granddaughter, and Tony Barrand will sing.

Admission to the event is free, with donations accepted.
