NEWFANE — Woodworker Dan DeWalt and printmaker Kim Colligan will show their works together for the month of May at the Crowell Gallery in Newfane's Moore Free Library.
Colligan and DeWalt are both members of the Rock River Artists, which will hold its 20th annual Open Studio Tour in July in the Newfane area.
Colligan's current work is produced by a process of laying colors down on a plate. There are often references to the natural world, but the pieces are driven by formal relationships of color, line, and shape.
Her titles come from a more whimsical place, “from whatever is floating around in my head - sometimes they are ideas, sometimes something someone has said, and it just resonates while I am working,” she said.
“Then in some crazy way I attach those thoughts to the image.”
DeWalt has entitled his contribution to the show “Serendipitous Detritus.” Sundry elements and circumstances have set themselves before him, and his pieces reflect his reaction to the encounters.
His newest works feature found elements dredged up by tropical storm Irene, Vermont and Maine shoreline finds, incorporating lumber, firewood, driftwood, metal, and stone. His works also reflect his upbringing as a fourth generation cabinetmaker, where the work and traditions of his forbears provided influences even before he had begun his own journey as a woodworker.
The opening for the show is scheduled for Saturday, May 5, from 1 to 3 pm at the Crowell Gallery on West Street in Newfane. The exhibit runs through May 28.
