DUMMERSTON — An open letter to Peter Gould, director of Robin Hood at the New England Youth Theater:
It was with such delight that I watched Robin Hood several weekends ago. My family, friends, and I left talking about the play's unique format and how fun it was to watch our young friends and neighbors shine. The kids did a fabulous job, no doubt!
In this particular letter, however, I want to thank you. I could see that you had made numerous choices as a director that would allow all of your actors to stand out.
Anyone who wanted to be Robin Hood or Maid Marian got to be. And so we, the audience, got to enjoy the one with the impeccable timing, the one with just the right sideways glance and cape toss, the one with the perfect intonation. We also got to share in Cassie's gymnastics talent and Aidan's on violin.
You found a way, it seemed, to bring each and every kid to the foreground to the extent she or he wanted, and they each left a memorable impression.
As a teacher, I know intimately the challenge of bringing forth the more reticent voices and encouraging the bold to hang back for a moment. It's not easy to help young children share “air time” amidst excitement, enthusiasm and sometimes ego.
You did it brilliantly. You are a role model and a reminder for all of us who work with children, or work with others in any capacity, to celebrate each and every one!
Thank you for your rare and exceptional gift, Peter. It did not go unnoticed.
