SAXTONS RIVER — Calligraphy, the art of producing decorative handwriting or lettering with a pen or brush, is the focus of a class at Main Street Arts.
The class will meet Saturdays from 9 to 11 a.m. for three weeks, beginning March 17.
It will offer an introduction to the Pilot Parallel Pen, which gives a smooth flow of ink without drips or blobs. Instructor Lynn Hoeft states that the thick-and-thin lines that characterize fine calligraphy are easy to achieve with this tool.
The class will concentrate on the italic alphabet (also called chancery cursive) that was developed in Italy during the Renaissance. Using these letterforms, participants will learn to make invitations, fancy cards and envelopes, certificates, and journals.
The fee for the three classes is $56 for members and $68 for non-members, including materials.
A Brattleboro artist, Hoeft works in both transparent watercolor and colored pencil. She was educated at Bennington College and Pratt Institute and has been a painter for 23 years. She has exhibited widely throughout Vermont, most recently at the Bennington Center for the Arts and the Chaffee Art Center in Rutland.
Pre-registration for the classes is requested by contacting Main Street Arts at 802-869-2960 or emailing.
Now in its 24th year, Main Street Arts is a non-profit community arts center dedicated to serving the creative needs of the greater community by encouraging creative exploration and expression through a wide range of experiences.
