BRATTLEBORO — Luminz and Open Music Collective will present a night of collaborative dance and music featuring the faculty of both performing arts schools.
When teachers at both schools realized they each were involved with a week-long intensive, they decided to create a collaborative workshop.
The show, which takes place Saturday, Oct. 22, at 8 p.m., will offer a mix of solo, duo, trio, quartet and larger ensemble performances and build upon the work done in the workshop.
Different combinations will bring out different ideas, with the focus being on musicians connecting to the dancers in more intertwining ways, with each taking turns to lead and explore.
In the preparation for the event, which involved 20 musicians and 10 dancers, teachers from both schools noted that the same vocabulary was used to teach the students of both arts. What came about was a special connection of improvisatory dance and music.
From the intimate duo setting of an acoustic bass and a single dancer, to the full-on explosion of an electric guitar power trio and full dance ensemble, organizers say that the show will offer a diverse and dynamic evening.
Luminz dancers include Aurora Corsano, Cyndal Ellis, Meg Van Dyke, and other seasoned dance artists and teachers who have long history of performing together. The dancers have worked often in collaboration with local musicians.
The musicians include David Goodrich on guitar, Doug Raneri on drums, and Jamie MacDonald on bass, collectively known as the Jazz Demolition Project. They draw from their own eclectic set of interests and specializations focused on improvisation drawn from extensive backgrounds in rock, bebop, fusion, Latin, and singer/songwriter genres.
The concert takes place at Luminz Studio on the third floor of the Cotton Mill Hill Building in Brattleboro. Tickets are $10 and can be reserved by calling 802-254-9200 or by email..
