Brattleboro leaf collection schedule announced
BRATTLEBORO - The town's curbside Fall Leaf Collection takes place on Friday, Oct. 21 and Friday, Nov. 4.
The whole town gets picked up on these two Fridays. All leaves and clippings must be in biodegradable brown paper leaf bags and at the curb by 7 a.m. on scheduled leaf collection days.
Acceptable waste includes leaves, grass, clippings, garden waste, and twigs (no branches larger than 1 inch in diameter and 2 feet long). No other household trash is to be included. No plastic bags or other containers will be accepted.
Biodegradable brown paper leaf bags may be purchased at local retailers. These will be the only days scheduled for curbside leaf pick up.
BMH Comprehensive Breast Care Program holds open house on Oct. 21
BRATTLEBORO - The Brattleboro Memorial Hospital Comprehensive Breast Care Program invites the public to an open house on National Mammography Day on Friday, Oct. 21, from 2-4 p.m., on the second floor of the Richards Building.
BMH's breast care nurse navigator Kelly McCue, RN, has organized a program that includes a tour of the mammography suite and a review of recent strides made by the program, including the awarding of a grant by the National Breast Cancer Foundation and the receipt of the American College of Radiology's Gold Seal of Approval.
As the hospital gets ready to start its high risk and genetics program, Dr. Joseph Rosen will give a brief talk about patients who are at high risk for breast cancer. Kim Timlege, LMT, will also give a brief review of the breast care program's gentle restorative yoga practice.
Pink cupcakes and pink lemonade will be served in observation of October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Music will be provided by harpist Joan Shimer, and Larry Enright of Enright & Company has donated a manicure/pedicure for a drawing. BMH Auxiliary & Care Committee seeks winter gear for Irene victims
BRATTLEBORO - The BMH Auxiliary & Care Committee seeks donations of gently used blankets, warm clothing, and Christmas décor for victims of Tropical Storm Irene on Saturday, Oct. 22.

Progressives to meet in Wilmington
WILMINGTON - The Vermont Progressive Party (VPP) of Windham and Bennington counties will meet on Tuesday, Oct. 25, at 5 p.m., in the undercroft at the Wilmington Congregational Church, 13 East Main St. (Route 9).

Process of rescuing damaged books outlined at RFPL
BELLOWS FALLS - On a cold and rainy night last December, a pipe burst in the Rockigham Free Public Library. It was perfectly situated over the Local History Room, soaking a large percentage of the library's rare local history books, archives, and art work.
Arriving at the library the next morning, Reference and Historical Collection Librarian Emily Zervas discovered the damage and immediately took action, setting in motion a long journey of rare book rescue - a story filled with loss and retrieval, professional conservators, high-tech processes and traditional techniques.
Hear all about it on Wednesday, Oct. 26, at 7 p.m., at the library. Everyone who played a part in the restoration will be present: Zervas; paper conservator Carolyn Frisa; book binders Malcolm and Anne Summers; and specialists from Polygon, a property damage restoration company.

Learn about Medicare D at Grace Cottage Hospital
TOWNSHEND - Grace Cottage Hospital will provide a free Medicare D information program for the public on Wednesday, Oct. 26, in the hospital's EMS Conference Room, Route 35, Townshend. The program will be presented three times during the day: at 10 a.m., 2 p.m., and 6 p.m.
Presenters will include pharmacists from Grace Cottage Hospital and Messenger Valley Pharmacy, plus PharmD students Andrew Osowski and Christopher Lee, from the Ohio Northern University School of Pharmacy.
This program will begin with a 20-minute overview about the Medicare D program and changes for the upcoming year. Attendees will be able to ask questions.
Next, attendees will be able to meet one-on-one with a pharmacist to explore the Medicare D website and to make changes in their options. While the pharmacists cannot give advice about which options to choose, they can help guide participants to information that will help inform their choices.

Halloween parade planned in Brattleboro
BRATTLEBORO - Brattleboro Halloween Parade 3 will be held on Monday, Oct. 31, at 6 p.m. Meet at the Stone Church (corner of Main and Grove streets).
All creative mavens are welcome: artists and designers, costume makers, musicians, street performers, dancers, drummers and percussionists, circus artists, stilt walkers, burlesques, mimes and revelers, etc. Everyone is welcome to join the parade - come as you are or come in costume.

Grace Cottage offers Zumba classes
TOWNSHEND - Grace Cottage Hospital's Wellness Center will host two eight-week Zumba classes starting on Oct. 25 on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
Zumba, the Latin-infused fitness party, combines easy-to-follow dance moves with invigorating Latin music, creating a fitness program that is both effective and fun. Appropriate for all ages and fitness levels, the only requirements are comfy clothes, low tread sneakers, a water bottle, and the ability to have fun.
Taught by certified Zumba instructor Carrie Goldsmith, this has quickly become one of the Wellness Center's most popular offerings. The class is limited to 20 participants. Marine Corps Ball set for Nov. 5
BRATTLEBORO - Area men and women who served honorably in the U.S. Marine Corps are preparing to celebrate the 236th birthday of the acclaimed military organization.
In Brattleboro, the Marine Corps League will hold its annual ball Saturday, Nov. 5, at the Elks Lodge on Putney Road, and according to Marine Corps League (MCL) Detachment 798 Commandant Richard Hodgdon, the public is invited to join them.
Following a dinner and Commandant's Message, there will be the traditional cake cutting ceremony followed by guest speaker, Richard D. Gore Sr., national MCL Judge Advocate.
The evening begins with a reception at 6 p.m., with dinner served promptly at 7 p.m. Annie & the Sapphires will provide music for dancing and listening for the remainder of the evening.
Tickets, with choice of baked stuffed chicken or prime rib, are on sale now at $30 per person and must be reserved by Oct. 31. The Marine Corps League and its auxiliary cites as its major activities Toys for Kids, which in 2010, provided well over 2,000 holiday gifts for needy children in the area; scholarships to deserving area high school graduates and participation in parades and military ceremonies. The detachment holds meetings the third Wednesday of each month at the American Legion Post 5 on Linden Street, and is currently seeking new members.
