BRATTLEBORO — The town has determined that it has spent some $106,450 to date to fix damages caused by Tropical Storm Irene .
Irene crashed through Vermont Aug. 28, drenching the state and sending floodwaters down Windham County's streams and rivers.
The water tore up roads, washed away buildings, and deposited mud and debris in its wake.
The Whetstone Brook flooded its banks, turning Flat Street into a river strong enough to carry away cars.
The town's payroll related to Irene totalled $106,450, of which $55,704 was for overtime labor, reported Finance Director John O'Connor at the Sept. 20 Selectboard meeting.
According to Town Manager Barbara Sondag, the town had budgeted for the straight-time payroll hours.
Shuttling the time toward Irene response, however, might require postponing previously planned municipal projects, said Selectboard Chair Dick DeGray.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) may reimburse the $55,704 of overtime, said Sondag, adding that insurance should almost completely cover the cost of clean-up except for about $500.
According to O'Connor, the town is still expecting hefty invoices from contractors and a bill from Baystate Elevator Co. for repairing the elevator in the Transportation Center, which sits between Flat and Elliot streets.
