BROOKLINE — The town of Brookline and the NewBrook Volunteer Fire Department have completed the installation of a dry fire hydrant on Hill Road.
This is the third hydrant installed in Brookline with the assistance of the Vermont Rural Fire Protection Task Force, and town officials say that it greatly enhances the ability of the NewBrook Fire Department to protect the residents and property within the town.
Dry hydrants are the preferred method of providing water for firefighting in areas where there are no water mains. This hydrant is connected to a private pond with a six-inch pipe and can be connected to a pump or tanker truck.
The fire department and towns are in the process of improving fire protection in Brookline and Newfane by installing dry hydrants to improve the availability and accessibility of water for firefighting.
The fire department recently tested the newly installed hydrant at over 1,000 gallons per minute.
The Vermont Rural Fire Protection Task Force, through the Northern Vermont Resource Conservation and Development Council, assisted in developing a plan to improve water supply in Brookline.
The Vermont Legislature approved appropriations to assist communities in installing dry hydrants to improve fire protection in rural areas. The Vermont Rural Fire Protection Task Force with the assistance of the Northern Vermont Resource Conservation and Development Council administers the grant program.
