BFMS band plans fundraiser

BELLOWS FALLS - The Bellows Falls Middle School band will perform on Friday, Sept. 30, beginning at 4 p.m., at the Bellows Falls Farmers' Market at the Waypoint Center in Bellows Falls.

The band, led by Stan Rumrill, will play several sets of their marching band music to entertain market goers and get the word out there about their trip to New York City in the spring. Band Friends of Music Students will also have a bake sale with pies, breads and ready to freeze items to help raise money for the band trip.

The New York City tour will include the band performing in front of the Statue of Liberty, a Broadway play, museums, parks and other attractions. Anyone wishing to make a donation may do so by visiting them at the Waypoint Center on Friday or by sending a tax deductible donation to: BFMS Band Friends, 15 School St. Bellows Falls, VT 05101.

Annual flea market, tag sale

TOWNSHEND - Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church will hold its annual Flea Market and Tag Sale on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 1 and 2 on the Townshend Common from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine. There will also be a baked goods sale along with the Flea Market.

This annual fund raiser for the church is in need of good flea market merchandise, including china and glassware, silverware, hand tools, small electric appliances, small furniture, wooden items, toys, games, knickknacks and collectibles, plus many other saleable items. Donated items may be left on Walter Meyer's front porch across the road from the Townshend Catholic church. If anyone has a question about donating items, call Meyer at 802-365-4246.

Harvest Festival Oct. 1

ATHENS - The Athens Brick Meeting House Common will be the site of the second annual Harvest Festival on Saturday, Oct. 1 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be pumpkin carving, pies, raffles, games for kids of all ages and more.

The historic Athens Brick Meeting House, built in 1817, was the site for community worship and Town Meetings as well as many militia training sessions, Old Home Day Celebrations and Fairs.

During this event, the building will be open for tours enabling visitors to learn much more about the fascinating history of this structure along with our current efforts to restore this historical treasure.

In addition to the festivities, there will be a silent auction, 50/50 Raffle, Cord Wood Raffle Bake Sale and other raffle items to benefit the renovation fund for the building. Donations to the Renovation Fund for the Athens Brick Meeting House are welcomed and will help with future efforts to secure grant funding.

Spaghetti supper served in Guilford

GUILFORD - The Guilford Fire Department Auxiliary hosts its fourth annual Spaghetti Supper at the Guilford Fire Station on Saturday, Oct. 1. Seatings will be at 5 and 6:30 p.m., and apple crisp will be served for dessert.

Tickets are $8 for adults, $4 for children 6-12, and free for kids 5 and under. For reservations, call Heidi at 802-254-6743.

Public forum on transportation

BRATTLEBORO - A public forum on Vermont's approach to the funding of public transportation will be held on Monday, Oct. 3, from 5:30-7 p.m., in the Selectboard meeting room at the Municipal Center on Main Street.

The theme is: “Stretching Transportation Dollars in Vermont: Finding New Money and Rethinking the Money We Have.“ It is co-sponsored by the Southeast Unit of the

League of Women Voters and the Brattleboro Branch of the American Association of University Women. The forum is free and open to the public.

Taking part as panelists are state Rep. Mollie Burke, Deputy Secretary of the Vermont Agency of Transportation Sue Minter, and senior planner Matt Mann of the Windham Regional Commission. Janet Cramer of the League will serve as moderator.

Topics for special focus will include emphasis on state budgeting, prospective fund reallocations, innovation, suggested town priorities and a comparison with other states.

Flu shot clinics offered at Grace Cottage

TOWNSHEND - Flu shot clinics for members of the public will be held at Grace Cottage Family Health, Route 35, Townshend, on Saturday, Oct. 1, from 9 a.m.-noon; on Saturday, Oct. 15, from 9 a.m.-noon; and on Thursday, Nov. 3, from 4-7 p.m. The flu shot cannot be given to anyone with an allergy to eggs.

No advance appointment is needed. The cost of the shot, if not covered by health insurance, is $78.11 for those ages 65 and older, $44.86 for those ages 19 to 64, and free except for an administrative fee of $13.86 for those 18 and younger. For more information, call 802-365-4331.

Wine tasting to benefit Kurn Hattin medical needs

KEENE, N.H. - On Thursday, Oct. 6, from 4:30-7 p.m., at the Keene Country Club, Kurn Hattin Homes in Westminster will host “A Taste of Hope,” a gourmet food, wine, and beer tasting benefit event.

Advance purchase tickets are $45, and $50 at the door. Net funds raised will benefit the Healthy Children Program, an important program that encompasses all of the Hurn Hattin children's physical, emotional and spiritual health and medical needs.

Guests will enjoy a wide variety of fine wines, beers and epicurean delights from some of the region's finest restaurants, specialty shops, caterers and distributors. There will also be a 50/50 raffle, an exciting silent auction, many great door prizes, music and lots of fun for all.
