BRATTLEBORO — Marlboro College Graduate School will hold its 2011 commencement ceremony on Saturday, Aug. 27, at 10 a.m.
Current Marlboro College Trustee Peter Galbraith will deliver the commencement address.
Galbraith, currently a Windham County state senator, is also a best selling author and a former U.S. diplomat.
In 1977, he was elected the youngest ever chair of the Vermont State Democratic Committee and helped lay the foundation for today's progressive politics.
In 1979, he joined the staff of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee where he uncovered and helped stop Saddam Hussein's genocide against the Kurds. In 1993, President Clinton appointed him the first U.S. Ambassador to Croatia where he negotiated the peace agreement that ended the Croatian War.
He also served with the United Nations in East Timor and Afghanistan.
This year's ceremony will also blend the new with the old. The regalia and program will follow the centuries-old commencement traditions. But those used to previous Grad School graduations will immediately see significant changes as well. For starters, the ceremony will be held in the Latchis Theater in downtown Brattleboro.
Another first will involve the reception. After walking up Main Street in caps and gowns, all will meet at the River Garden to enjoy food, friendship, photos, and views of the Connecticut River and Mt. Wantastiquet.
To top it all off, this will be the first commencement for graduates of two of our new programs: Master of Arts in Teaching for Social Justice and the Certificate in Online Teaching.
Marlboro College Graduate School offers master's degrees, certificate programs and professional development courses to working adults in a blended format that combines online learning and face-to-face classes. Current programs include a Master of Arts in Teaching with Technology, a Master of Science in Information Technologies, a Master of Science in Management-Health Care Administration, an MBA in Managing for Sustainability, a Master of Science in Managing Mission-Driven Organizations, a Master of Arts in Teaching for Social Justice, and a wholly online Bachelor of Science completion program for Managing Information Systems.
Marlboro College Graduate School is part of Marlboro College, a private, four-year liberal arts college with a history of teaching students to think clearly and learn independently.
