BRATTLEBORO — This year marks the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the Civil War in the United States. On the grounds where Brattleboro Union High School and Brattleboro Area Middle School now stand, more than 10,000 of Vermont's soldiers were mustered into service, and more than 4,600 veterans of the war were mustered out. The site was also home to a field hospital.
In 1906, a large monument honoring the men who passed through Brattleboro in service to the Union cause was dedicated on the site. Today, the monument stands on the lawn in front of BUHS.
We are staging a commemoration event on the grounds of BUHS and this Civil War site on Sept. 21 at 10 a.m. (rain or shine). We will follow the same program used at the 1906 dedication.
We are asking that anyone who may have documented information about any Vermont soldier who was mustered in or out of Brattleboro between 1861 and 1865 share that information with us.
