BRATTLEBORO — Would you believe that 30 volunteers spent over 145 hours sorting books, setting up shelving, hauling boxes filled with books, and getting the books in order for the library's book sale? And would you believe that volunteers staffed cashiers' posts for two days, and worked 18 person-hours to take down the lion's share of the sale area and get the library back into shape for Monday's regular activities?
That's exactly what it took, thanks to all the volunteers: Bill Baker, Jill Barrows, Mary Lou Buchanan, Mary Carnahan, Carol Corwin, Kathy Gaiser-Licht, Dan Garceau, Kaliegh Garceau, Frankie Gibson, Bob Glennon, Sara Glennon, Michael Hanley, Judy Hildreth, Harriet Ives, Connie Kimball, Wayne Licwov, Peg Lopata, Kathy Maisto, KariLyn McLellan, Elaine Murray (book sorter extraordinaire), Vickie Poulos, Maggie Schiller, Fannie Speno, Gabriel Susca-Lopata, Kathryn Turnas, Ken Vitale, Marshall Wheelock, and Veronica Wheelock.
And special thanks go to Librarian Therese Marcy for all her organizational efforts.
Lest I forget, there were also the many people who donated the wonderful selection of books, audiobooks, music, videos, and DVDs. Without them, we could not have had a book sale at all.
The book sale, to date, has netted $4,300, money sorely needed to help fund the popular First Wednesdays lecture programs that resume this October; to provide needed funds to support the Children's Summer Program (registration for which began June 17th); to expand the popular Museum Pass lending program; and to fund other important library activities.
Last year, the book sale was an instrumental part of our ability to obtain matching funds from the Gates Foundation Online Opportunity Grant, helping to provide a cyber-lifeline for many of the library's patrons.
A final thank-you goes to all of you who stopped in to browse, to select a book, or to greet one of our volunteers.
It really did take the whole town to run a library book sale! Thank you, Brattleboro.
